Description:

The client came to us with the aim to undertake a comprehensive conversion and extension of an existing semi-detached 5-bedroom house into five self-contained 1, 2 and 3 bedroom flats. The brief put forward was for us to explore the best way in which to extend the building, looking to maximise habitable space through two-storey and single-storey additions to create a spacious development with high specification kitchens and bathrooms, whilst also looking to greatly improve and add to the building’s aesthetics.

Looking to use as much of the existing building superstructure as possible, an innovative internal layout manages to create well-lit interiors and easy circulation space, minimising the amount of work needed during construction. Through careful design development exploring multiple options, a finalised scheme was produced, including a 3-bedroom ground floor flat with access to its own private rear garden, an open plan third floor flat with accommodation within the converted roof space, a large communal rear garden with cycle parking, and a redesigned front garden with electric car charging parking spaces.

Whilst the interior planning looked to maintain as much of the previous building as possible, a two-story Zinc clad side extension and new white render to the external facades aimed to give the development a fresh modern aesthetic, significantly improving the street scene. Added to this, a Sedum roof interspersed with large skylights over the new rear extension, helps to improve the environmental credentials and ensure a more natural outlook from the upper flats.
