Description:

After we initially explored the limited feasibility of converting the existing shop and workshop into residential units, the client instead opted to create a new purpose built block, consisting of 4 individual flats. The site, set within the Dorking Conservation Area, was restricted to the outline of the existing building which presented an interesting challenge due to the parameters it imposed, such as ensuring the new envelope of the building followed the existing line exactly in order to maximise potential living space.

The new two storey block comprises of four one-bedroom apartments, all accessed via a central hallway, and all including a double bedroom, bathroom, and open plan kitchen, living, dining room. Designed and finished to a high specification, the flats benefit from increased insulation throughout to reduce energy consumption, as well as having PV panels designed to blend in with the slate tile roof, bringing electricity to each flat from an on-site renewable source.

Externally the building was designed to replicate the original, whilst also improving and increasing some historic details in order to enhance the conservation area. Brick piers, Flemish bond brickwork and decorative brickwork to the gable-ends of the building were all carefully designed to truly represent the original building and employ now lesser used traditional styles and construction techniques.
